Our founders, Stephen Lyster and Chris Woodside, started EQUIRIDE after getting tired of paying premium prices to ship horses. They knew there had to be a better solution - and they found it! Son of trainer R. Warren Lyster, Stephen has been caring for Thoroughbreds his whole life. Starting in college, Stephen managed his family farm of 50+ thoroughbreds and worked in sales operation at every major auction on the east coast. Eager to get back to the racetrack, Stephen took out his trainer’s licenses at age 24. He currently oversees all aspects of the racing business, keeping stables in Kentucky, Florida, and New York.
Chris Woodside was born and raised in Texas. Growing up, he frequently traveled to Lexington, KY to visit his grandparents. After visiting Keeneland for the first time, Chris fell in love with horse racing, and he often traveled to Lexington to attend the Spring and Fall races. In 2002 he moved to Lexington, where he graduated from Lexington Catholic High School. Soon afterward, Chris and Stephen met while attending the University of Kentucky. Chris started going to the track with Stephen, watching his operation with aspirations to own horses. After graduating from the University of Kentucky, Chris moved to Chicago and is currently a commercial banker.

The "lightbulb moment" for the founders of EQUIRIDE came when trainer Stephen Lyster voiced his frustrations to Chris Woodside, a college friend and fellow graduate of the University of Kentucky. "Stephen and I had always played around with ideas of starting companies together, and one day out of frustration dealing with horse shippers, he said, 'We just really need to come up with a service where we can connect trainers to van drivers,'" recalled Woodside, a Chicago-based commercial banker. "I lay in bed and thought about it for a long time and decided I really liked the idea...read more on TDN
